Adultery?

Do you believe an unmarried person can commit the sin of adultery?

Of course not, because adultery is sex between a married individual and someone who is not their spouse. So an unmarried man or woman can’t be guilty of the sin of adultery.

In Matthew 5:28, Jesus says, whoever looks at a woman to lust after her, has already committed adultery with her in their heart.

If an unmarried person can not commit the sin of adultery, then they can’t commit the sin of adultery in their heart. So Matthew 5:28 is not saying “dont look with lust” what it is saying is this: Do not contemplate having an affair; if you as much as consider having an affair, you will be guilty of committing adultery in your heart.

Is it possible for an unmarried person to commit the sin of fornication? Yes, because fornication is sexual intercourse outside of marriage. Fornication is a sin, but we never see the Bible saying, “whoever looks at a woman to lust after her in their heart, has already committed the sin of fornication with her in their heart.”

It is not a sin for an unmarried man or woman to have a healthy sexual desire and lust for the opposite sex. It is not a sin for a married man or woman to have a healthy sexual appetite and lust for the opposite sex. Committing the sin of fornication (sex outside of marriage) is a sin, a sin that will keep you out of heaven. Committing the sin of adultery (both in your heart and in your flesh) is a sin that will keep you out of heaven. So even though it is not a sin to have a healthy sexual desire and lust for the opposite sex, you are responsible for making sure you dont act on your desire until you are married. And when you are married, you are responsible for staying faithful to your spouse and never even considering the idea of having an affair.

If you are guilty of the sin of adultery or the sin of fornication, you still have time to repent.

1. John 1:9 says, if you repent of the sin of fornication and the sin of adultery, Yehovah will forgive you of it. But keep in mind, divorce and remarriage is the sin of adultery just as much as contemplating having an affair. So if you are divorced and remarried, repentance means leaving your adulterous second, third, or fourth marriage and returning to your first spouse.
