In Deut 18:22, we read, ” When a prophet speaks in the name of Yehovah, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which Yehovah has not spoken, but the prophet has spoken it presumptuously, you will not be afraid of him.”
In Deut 18:20, we read, ” But the prophet who will presume to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that will speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet will die.”
In Deut 131-, we read, ” If a prophet or a dreamer rises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass of which he spoke to you saying, “Let us go after other gods, which you have not known, and let us serve them.” You will not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams for Yehovah your God test you, to now whetever you love Yehovah your God with all your heart and with all your being. You will walk after Yehovah your God and rever Him,m keep His commandments, obey His voice, and you will serve Him and cleave to Him. And that prophet or that dreamer of dreams will be put to death because he has spoken to turn you away from Yehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust you out of the Way which Yehovah your God commanded you to walk in. So you will put the bad away from your midst.”
What is a prophet or a prophecy?
Most people I encounter believe a prophet foresees the future, someone who can claim dates, names on future spouses, and even spy on other peoples’ personal affairs. On the other hand, in the Bible, a prophet calls people to repent back to Yehovah and sometimes but not always foresees the future.
This is why we read, in Deut 13, that there will be prophets who prophesy or tells of dreams they have had that become true. But if this prophet or dreamer tells you to ignore the law of God (the Mosaic law), he or she is false, and you should not listen to them. So a false prophet can prophesy something that comes true.
With this in mind, if we read Deut 18:22 in its context, it will make much more sense. Starting in verse 17, Yehovah says He will give us a prophet like Moses, someone who will call people to repent back to the law of God. This prophet is Jesus Christ, who lived among us and told everyone to repent, teaching us to obey the Mosaic law and told us how to do it. (Matt 5:17, 23:2-4) In verse 19, Yehovah says those who do not obey the teachings of Jesus will be rejected by Yehovah. (Matt 7:21-23.) Should someone else arise and claim to be sent by Yehovah, teaching a different message than Jesus, they are a false prophet (Deut 13), and they shall die. This is the same thing Paul says in Gal 1:8. In verse 22, Yehovah tells us how to differentiate between a false prophet and a true prophet. A true prophet calls people to repent warning us what will happen if we dont repent, and promises us what blessings we will be given if we repent. What such a prophet has said will always happen, and that is how we can tell the difference between a true and a false prophet. But if a false prophet prophecy, something that does not happen, we shall not be afraid of them.
So now we know what a prophet is according to the Bible.
A prophet is not someone who can tell you the name of your future spouse or how to win the lottery. They are not someone who can tell you what is happening in the life of your ex-husband or ex-wife. A true Biblical prophet is someone who calls people to repent back to the law of God. Someone who warns people and tells them what will happen to them if they dont repent and what will happen if they do repent. A true Biblical prophet is someone who knows the law of God and teaches it to other people.
A false prophet is someone who calls people to reject the law of God. Yehovah allowed them to make accurate predictions about the future, but we should never fear them because what they say will never happen.
This gives us a new perspective on what is happening right now in 2021. We have all these “prophets” who prophecied who would serve as the USA’s president for the next four years. As far as I know, they do not believe we should abide by the Mosaic law today. This shows us, from the Bible, they are false prophets. They are not false prophets because what they said did not happen; they are false prophets because they are not teaching people to repent back to the law of God.
Deut 13 says Yehovah will allow a false prophet to make an accurate prediction to test and to see if you love Him or not. So it is a possibility Yehovah could suddenly intervene in who will serve as the next president, and all these “prophets” will suddenly be “proven as true prophets.” If this happens, keep in mind that it is Yehovah testing you to see whether or not you love Him. So it is not necessarily a good thing if we suddenly were to see a change in who will become the next president.
